Science

Living in a highly technological world requires a solid foundation in the sciences. Our approach will be very much "hands-on" with students experiencing science in each classroom. All science classes will involve laboratory work, the application of critical thought, and the blending of math and science. It is expected that upon completion of the each major course, students will be able to take the SAT II test in early June.

Science 5 - Environmental Science

Environmental Science provides an in-depth study of the environmental concepts and ecosystems. Utilizing laboratory, classroom and independents research, students will explore various divisions of the global biomes. Man's effect on the world's biomes is an underlining theme. This study is enhanced by a series of laboratory investigations illustrating the major concepts to be covered. Biology, chemistry, physical science and earth science topics will be further explored and applied to this study of the global environment. 9th and 10th Grade.

Science 10 - Conceptual Physics

This laboratory science covers all of the principal topics in physics, with an emphasis on conceptual understanding as well as problem solving. As such, labs and demonstrations play a central role in the course. Considerable learning takes place through doing and discussion and extensive use of technology. Computers are used routinely for data collection, data analysis, simulation exercises, research, and practice tests. Topics studied include mechanics, properties of matter, waves and optics, and electricity and magnetism. This course will serve as the foundation for further study in all of the sciences, including chemistry and biology. 9th, 10th, and 11th grade.

Science 20 - Chemistry

chemistryThis course is designed for college-bound students with both technical and liberal arts interests. It is taught as an issue based curriculum developed by the American Chemical Society addressing the state and national science educational standards. The teaching of traditional chemistry topics revolves around chemistry related issues currently confronting our society and the world. It is designed to help students use chemistry knowledge to make informed decisions about issues involving science and technology and to realize the important role chemistry plays in their lives. Laboratory exercises are an integral part of the course. They are used as a vehicle for understanding the chemical concepts important to a rigorous chemistry course. 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.

Prerequisite(s): Conceptual Physics and concurrent enrollment in Geometry or higher math

Science 60 - Advanced Placement Biology

This advanced course is equivalent to a first-year course in college biology, and course materials used are college-level texts and laboratory manuals. The course is laboratory-oriented, with two double lab periods each week. Content includes the characteristics and organization of life, metabolism, responsiveness and coordination, reproduction, evolution, biotechnology, and ecology. In addition to the required 12 labs, many other labs will be performed to supplement reading material. 11th and 12th grade.

Prerequisite(s): Chemistry or permission of the instructor.
