Applied Math Students Play the Market

Applied Math Students Watching the Big Board

During the fall, The Elon School Applied Math students participated in the Global Stock Market Challenge.  This three month competition gathers teams of students from all around the world to experience a realistic view of investing in the stock market.  Teams are given $100,000 to invest into companies that they research to see if it is a wise place for their money.  In order to better simulate what actual brokers and mutual fund managers do, they were not allowed to invest in “penny stocks” or to put more than $25,000 in any one investment.  There was also a transaction fee to simulate broker fees.  Because this was the “Global” challenge, students could invest in several foreign markets including London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, and Canada.

We had three teams of students from The Elon School.  Team 1: Rose Hankins and Evan Dubay, Team 2: Katy Canada and Eric Peavy, and Team 3: Ryan Daye and Blake Pinson.  Dr. Bonessi also had a teacher account to invest with.  They all used different strategies for their money.  Team 1 ranked 7th, Team 2 ranked 5th, and Team 3 ranked 11th.  Dr. Bonessi earned 2nd place.  They all had a very good showing in a competition that saw many lead changes throughout the three months.   Everyone learned a little more about managing money and how the world of investing works.
